First of all, really nice design. Its very visually pleasing.
I like the new project system. Everything now seems more HD.
Great! BUT

Where is the score on the thumbnails?
Really guys?
Remove the score on the front page, on a website that is BASED on scores?

Also, please, descriptions while hover the thumb.
Would change my appreciation of the redesign from 2/5 to 5/5.

Now the website just looks like a random flash gaming website.
website where content is just thrown at your face randomly to generate more traffic.
Please be more elegant, give us the choice to filter through crap we don't care about.

That is all. Thank you for reading.

I agree in a small way. but despite the extreme colours, I kinda like the interface. ng have clearly thought this through unlike youtube.

Well I think the colors are great to be honest. Its nice to see an artistic design on an artistic web site.
My main concern is accessibility of the information, because in the end, that's what really matters.

I think the scores were replaced with the stars

Yes, but you cannot see how many stars submissions have on the front page >:(

I agree with you completely! I love the design, but can't find anything relevant to the submissions. I have no incentive to click anything when I don't know anything about it other than an icon. Very frustrating.

Yeah its like... you have to click every single thumbnail to read the desc and score. WTF

Also, a drop-down menu on the submission page that shows the other submissions from the author.

The reason for this is so 0 bombers don't spot out the highest scoring submissions and take them down. It makes it much harder now for people to 0 bomb everything. Newgrounds is also trying to focus on REVIEWING rather than RATINH, since reviewing is much more important and relevant to how well done a submission is.

Yes, but the majority of the people don't have time to press every single thumbnail to load the game page and see what the game is about. At least with the score and description you knew that you were going to have a good experience.

I think its great to focus more on reviews and stop 0 bombers, but its wrong to do it by means that put us in the dark about the actual content.

I agree absolutely. The front page seems cheap and tacky without the descriptions and info. I really don't want to have to browse based on icons. However, I really do like the new art and the improved search bar and user interface, as well as the more transparent feel with the awards. Now I can see all of the best new games, but I can't see anything about them but that. I'd give the redesign 1/5 right now, simply because it absolutely destroys the purpose of the portal. The old design gets 5/5, and an improved redesign would definitely get 11/5. I really, REALLY hope they fix it.

So what you're saying is you make a vast assumption of an entry based on other people's opinions and getting a predetermined view that has no basis in your own experience?

Actually I do kind of sympathize, but I can understand if NG wants to draw focus away from that aspect. Its not exactly accurate or unbiased. They want people to focus on stuff that's not just overly inflated scored, currently popular content.

I understand, but I think its better to make your opinion on the icon, the description and the score than on the icon alone. The more information we have, the happier we are. No?

I must agree I would do some change to the movies/games frontpage icons.

Yay!

Without descriptions there's really no reason to click on any of the games/movies. It's like if a news website only had pictures and no headlines, it just doesn't seem right. The site is still changing though, I'm sure they will take your comments into account.

Besides that I hope they figure out someway to upload comics cause I want to upload mine but I don't want to clog the art portal -_-

Well I don't think you would clog the portal :P I have seen many people submit comic pages. If you really don't want to waste space, you could try making a flash that has all the pages in it. Like a virtual book.

I agree. Lots of things were added. Lots of things were upgraded. Some of that is really great. But a lot of stuff was removed or made more difficult to use. Why do I have to go to 3 pages to get all the info about an account that I used to get on ONE profile page? My rank icon is small and hidden within my profile somewhere. I used to be proud of the thing, but now no one sees it, including me.

Everything was nicely and logically laid out, but now there are things I can't find at all. If I can't find someone's submissions easily, how can I expect someone to find my stuff when they're new to the site?

The pages move too. Based on the size of the flash, sometimes the voting 0-5 is to the side of an entry, but other times, it's below it and out of the viewing are of the screen. Everything used to be in the same place all the time, so you always knew where you're at.

Anyone notice that there's no way to blow the whistle on anything yet? I figure it was just an oops.

If they didn't have the "Classic Portal" I don't know how I'd be feeling. As it is, I almost feel like I've lost a best friend. :'( I've put 7 years into building my account here. I was hoping to start flash soon so I can submit things. Now, I'm kinda lost. :\

We're stuck, though. When sites spend this much time and effort on changes, they're permanent. They never just bring back the old stuff. We can only hope that they'll bring back some of the things that used to make this site great and take the best of the old and mix it with the new that we have no choice over anyway.

We can only hope that the response to the redesign will cause them to see things this way and make a few more changes. Back. Most people will stop complaining in a week or two as they get used to it or get tired of complaining. If it continues or if the ad revenue goes down, then they'll take a closer look. They've got enough ads that the Newgrounds ad revenue may not suffer much. But when it's difficult for people to find the flashes and artists they're looking for, the artists will see their views and ad share go down.

I think you are mostly right about what they got wrong. But these mistakes they might have made are not permanent. Newgrounds always listened to its users and while it might take some time, they will be making changes to the redesign in the future to add / modify features. Lets just hope its sooner than later.

Oh DUDE!!

You made Scuba! And the Age Of War games! Scuba's in my favorites and I didn't even recognise you til I searched thru your profile. That just shows how much information we miss now! :'(

I love you

You make a real good point.
Now the preview images are all we'll have to making our stuff look interesting. I really worry about people taking advantage of this layout without the scores. Someone makes some horrible flash, uploads the preview image as some nice titties, click click click. No one's gunna know it has a score of 2.03 until they load the page up.

The redesign is godly in my opinion other than a few points, (most which you mentioned).

1. The ratings, it's much more difficult to see the exact rating of a Movie/Game with using the star system. I really liked how detailed scoring was before.
2. A few things about the main tabs that bother me... One, it's harder to access the classic portal. We all love it, it deserves its own big ol' button. Also, the "Games" are before the "Movies". I've always come to NG to view impressive animations... I didn't realize this has become more of a gaming website now.
3. Needs some more roll over options: What I mean by this, is when you roll your mouse over submissions in the classic portal you no longer see the icon/score/author/etc. Also, it'd be nice if when you rolled over the larger submission icons that are on the front page and such, if we could see the score in another corner. Cause the scoring of submissions on NG were really what guided me to what movies/games I'd click on. I don't want to browse through every fucking thing on NG

Anyways, it'd be great to know where to officially complain about this stuff too. Hopefully they see it here. But honestly, I love the redesign. I'm not mad enough to find out who to report all this to and such.

Hopefully they adjust those changes though.

Yeah I agree with you. The new website is nice, but lacks ease of access to information.

A new preloader to fit the design would be cool. The hover descriptions would be really handy too

Indeed, and lets not forget the submission score too! :D

You present good points. I think at this stage they're feeling their way through the pros and cons of changes, and i too would like to see scores visible in browsing. Some things that have really made it awesome for me so far have been the project system, and surprisingly the notifications button, which made me really want to go around adding everyone I have ever enjoyed to my favorites lists to get updates more regularly. Like you for example. ;)

Now I'm just flirting...

Oh I like when you flirt with me Jazza :) I'd like to add you as a someone I follow, I guess ill have to figure out the way to do it :P

We tried a lot of stuff with the thumbnails and rollovers during development and just never got happy with anything but in the end we knew we would be re-addressing it post-launch. I think we'll make people the most happy if we can give them a visible title (so they can scan the page for those), with the right amount of rollover info. Our original rollover box had everything people could possibly want and it got way too bloated, so we gotta find a happy medium. One of the arguments around here is that people don't need stars on a front paged submission because everything there is supposed to be good. They would be super useful when browsing the latest content though, as well as user pages, and I want to be consistent wither whatever our final formatting ends up being.

We also are interested in giving people a toggle button in the header, to flip between the more condensed layout and one that brings back title and description to the right of the thumbnail (like the P-Bot post)... So if we improve our rollover info AND have that toggle I think we'll maximize happiness.

@Exedor - We are bringing back some user stats to the user frontpage. We were trying to make room for future additions but a few stats won't take up too much room. We'll also be bringing back some other things that went missing, like the big text lists from "View All" in the Classic Portal and a way to see the users who favorited your individual submissions - that one was more of a whoopsie because we replaced the old management pages with the Project System.

All these things sounds really nice. I think the best would be to allow users what information they want to display on that thumbnail zone.

I think it would be great to be able to toggle these information:

-Score (4.21) (no need for the /5 I think)
-Title
- Short description
- Author

And to be able to turn off the thumbnail:

-Thumbnail (maybe I want to see titles and scores only? slow internet perhaps?)

I understand that all this is hard on the loading queries, so I would suggest to only allow 2 or 3 of the 4 options at a time. You could even include these filters with a small button on the upper right of the section header.

I really think it would make a huge difference.

But its only my opinion :P
